The image of the festival girl, that elusive free-spirited creature, has been lingering in the fashion imagination for the last few seasons, from her flower-topped crown right down to her gladiator sandal-clad toes. And yet few can bring those familiar bohemian references to an entirely new place in the same way that Valentino designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli can.
While the silhouette of drop-waisted and bell-sleeved lace dresses evoked the easy romance of barefoot flower children, the intricate hand of the clothes spoke to a distinctly modern couture-like craftsmanship that we’ve come to expect from this talented pair: We love these casual Chuck Taylor–style sneakers spun with a beaded star-spangled motif that stood on the same level as the treatment of the exquisite evening looks.

Fashion 101:Pennsylvania-born Mary Alice Malone of Malone Souliers was a member of the U.S. Junior Equestrian team and a furniture designer before she discovered her true passion and studied shoemaking at the London College of Fashion. Her first collection, unveiled during London Fashion Week, conflated Fifties and Seventies styles. “That’s when sexy was really sexy,” she explained. “There was this beautiful minimalism, keeping a lot concealed and only revealing selectively. These days, it’s all four-way mirrors.”She’s keen to reprise traditional techniques and craftsmanship, and said her mules feature a spring-o-later on the inner sole. “It gets rid of the horrible slapping sound when you walk,” she said of the device she borrowed from a pair of vintage shoes she found in a market.

Bamboo sandals by Gucci: For sun-kissed feet, Gucci presents soft suede sandals with a gold bamboo detail as the must-have shoe this Summer.
At the head of the Italian fashion house, Guccio Gucci‘s sons Aldo, Ugo, Vasco and Rodolfo designed the Bamboo, a soft leather bag adorned with a curved bamboo handle, in 1957. With its iconic look, 13 hours of hand-crafting and variations in precious leathers and exotic skins, the Bamboo continues to be one of the most desirable Gucci signature pieces. For Spring/Summer 2014, creative director since 2004 Frida Giannini takes inspiration from the iconic Bamboo bag, with a pair of delicate suede sandals featuring the gold bamboo detail.
