Prabal Gurung x Mac Cosmetics Via Vogue fr
With his ever-popular collections flying off the shelves in America and his infectious sense of humor, it’s no wonder MAC asked Prabal Gurung, the self-proclaimed “mama’s boy, with a passion for beauty” to create a Christmas capsule collection. We met with the designer to find out more.
When did you first come into contact with MAC?
As MAC is the go-to make-up brand for New York Fashion Week I first came into contact with the label backstage. They have provided the beauty looks for a number of shows, including my collections for the last five years. I was thrilled when the idea of a collaboration first came about two years ago. At the time I remember thinking it was a risk for such a well-known brand to work alongside a small label like mine, but also a smart move!
Tell us about the collaboration.
Everything ran smoothly, the MAC team certainly know how to take risks. They let me take total control over the design of the collection and the colors involved. I had high-quality objects of perfection in mind, fitting with my mantra of “beauty with substance”. Two years later, the collection is finally ready. I am really proud of it, it dovetails with my style and is true to my original ideas . I cannot thank MAC enough for their patience during the creative process, particularly regarding the box for the Color Bronzer.
Did you have any particular inspirations for the collection?
Yes, Helmut Newton and Damian Hirst inspired the mesh effect of the casing, using a combination of popular and more unexpected colors.
What essential make-up rule should we be following?
I like the idea of a woman changing her make-up look as the day goes on. In the morning, she should highlight the freshness of her complexion with a sunset blush where the sun hits. In the afternoon, she should focus on the eyes then at night, opt for a standout lip, in either a soft or bold color depending on the occasion.
What does beauty and make-up mean to you?
For me it is the same as fashion. In my career I have been lucky enough to dress women as varied as Cate Blanchet, Diane Kruger, Zoe Saldana, the Duchess of Cambridge and Michelle Obama and I endeavor to convey their personality and intelligence through their outfit. In terms of make-up, I find that the more the look reflects a personality, the more successful it is. Personally I am a real mama’s boy, as a child I loved watching my mother put on her make, I found it fascinating. For me, beauty also relates to well being, I play sports three to four times a week, mediate twice a day for twenty minutes and have regular acupuncture sessions.
The Prabal Gurung x MAC Cosmetics collection will launch Nov. 26 and will be available here.
