We’re used to scrutinizing the looks of countless celebrities, but what about the fabulous style of a much-loved fictional character? Popular American period drama Mad Men has just the lady: sassy office manager Joan Harris, portrayed by actress Christina Hendricks.

The 1960′s drama features this remarkable character, whose office outfits ooze confidence and sex-appeal. Joan’s look seems to be made up of a wardrobe full of bodycon dresses, tight shirts and alluring pencil skirts. The glam character knows how to work her curves too, wearing dresses that clinch in at the waist to emphasize her voluminous bust and rounded hips.

Joan Harris has now emerged as something of a style icon. Christina Hendricks commented that “Each woman on the show has a distinct style…all the dresses I get to wear are pretty fabulous”. She further explains why Joan is such an attractive character: “She’s got fire to her. She snaps back. And men love her because she’s in touch with her sexuality and femininity.”

Her style may be 50 years old, but fashion has come full circle, and now you can get Joan’s look for the modern day. Bodicon dresses are perfect for a night out, but can also be worn to work with the right accessories and a pair of tights. These tight fitting, figure hugging dresses do wonders for creating a curvy feminine shape, and this season why not try one in a trendy Aztec print or a bright floral pattern.

If bodicon dresses aren’t for you, then you can easily get Joan’s look by pairing your favorite shirt or tight-fitting jumper with a high-waisted pencil skirt. This slightly more demure look will accentuate the waist by breaking up the outfit into two noticeable pieces. Model Miranda Kerr recently did this with a bold graphic print pencil skirt for a modern twist on the classic style.
