Maude & Tilda: Will Fuck for Chanel

Don't you love these Maude & Tilda bags? I can't wait to get one, first because I love their "messages" and two because their real message is to go green: "One of the main concepts behind these tote bags is to pro...vide a fashionable alternative to using plastic bags. Whether carrying home groceries from the supermarket or carrying around your latest wardrobe additions, you can tell the people in the store to keep their bag because you have your own".

What are you waiting for? This is your chance to turn heads ;)

{fashion history} The Muse Behind the Hermès Kelly Bag

Who else to make a fashion statement out of a secret pregnancy but the one and only Grace Kelly. We can thank her for bringing the Hermes Handbag to the public’s eyes when she was spotted using it to cover up a “baby bump”.

It was introduced in the 1930’s and is named after Grace Kelly due to the publicity she helped it gain. Both of Hermes most famous and high demand bags, the “Kelly” bag and the “Constance” bag are both on one-year waiting lists.

After making its debut with Kelly on the cover of Life Magazine, the Sac à dépêches bag was renamed in her honor by either the company or possibly just the public.

This handbag is made by one craftsman in about 18 hours and is made with rich materials from all over the world. It’s no wonder the princess loved it and the public loves it now.

{trends} 2012 Swimwear Trend Report

Although the winter holidays are quickly approaching, I’m already counting down the days to summer… and it doesn’t help that I’m seeing new 2012 swimwear styles everywhere! After looking at the new collections from OndadeMar, ViX and L Space, my all-time favorite swimwear brands, I’ve noticed some obvious trends. Fashionistas take note and look perfectly on-trend this season!

Bold Artsy Prints in Bright Colorful Hues

For the 2012 swimwear season, it’s all about bold artsy prints done in brightly colored hues.  For example, L Space’s Desert Heat story features a mesmerizing watercolor-inspired print featuring an array of vibrant colors.  Similarly, ViX has a number of ombre and ikat prints done in rainbow-like color palettes, as seen in the Uluwatu print. These bold 2012 swimwear styles will definitely show off that sexy summer tan.

Color Meets Classic Animal Prints

Animal prints are a tried and true trend but for 2012, they have been revamped and infused with color!  New 2012 swimwear styles from OndadeMar, L Space and ViX show us what happens when color meets classic animal prints.  Think orange python prints from ViX, leopard prints with pops of purple and coral from OndadeMar and chic zebra print styles with colorful splashes of lime from L Space. A fun new twist on a classic swim trend!

Fab New Floral Motifs

Like the animal print trend, floral prints are a classic go-to style for swimwear, so it’s necessary for designers to recreate them in innovative new ways every year.  The 2012 swimwear collection from L Space features a retro ‘50s inspired floral story, while OndadeMar has a floral-infused paisley print.  Similarly, ViX has an Asian-inspired floral print done in deep moody hues.

These 2012 swimwear styles are available at InStyleSwimwear.com—my favorite place to buy swimwear online!

{book} Limited Edition Chanel Books

Assouline and Chanel are offering a very special limited edition — a hand-made slipcase in the fashion house’s iconic tweed for the publisher’s three-book set on Chanel fashion, jewelry and perfumes. Only 30 tweed slipcovers will be available, and the exclusivity comes at a price. Each is priced at $2,500 and sold at Assouline as well as Neiman Marcus.

To commemorate Coco Chanel and the release of these books, I have put together a list of facts about her, that maybe you never heard before:
  • She was born in France in 1883 and was part of a big family, as one of five children.
  • When Coco was 12, her mother passed away from tuberculosis and her father left the family; she spent the next six years in an orphanage.
  • She became a licensed hat-maker and owned her first shop in 1910.
  • She is credited with popularizing the concept of “costume jewelry” in the 1920s, creating seasonal jewelry that mixed fake pearls with real stones.
  • After a fortune-teller told her that 5 was her lucky number, she named her perfume Chanel No. 5, and it made her millions.
  • She invented the “Little Black Dress” in 1926.
  • She died in 1971 at the Ritz Hotel in Paris at the age of 88.
  • She was a Leo and collected lions.
  • Whenever she went to her apartment on Rue Cambon, there were orders to spray Chanel No. 5 around the stairway so her signature scent would greet her.
  • She was the first designer to put her own name on a fragrance.
  • She was bisexual.
  • Her German lover, Hans Günther von Dincklage, was a spy for the Nazis.

{beauty} Go Glam for the Holidays

Working closely with world-class chemists, designers, beauty editors and makeup artists, Le Métier de Beauté focuses on the three core values of luxury: craft, design and excellence.

The Kaleidoscope kits are one of my favorites, they have four colors presented in a unique stacking system with a flip-top mirror. They come in varieties available for lips, eyes, and face and I love them as they avoid having so many makeup boxes all over the place.

For the holiday season, Le Metier de Beaute introduces Ken Downing's StocKen Stuffers Mini-Nail Lacquer Set, exclusively at Neiman Marcus. The decadent color and opulent sheen of these two irresistible sets of four mini-nail lacquers brings glitz and glamour right to your fingertips! Each set is accompanied by a one-of-a-kind glimmering gold or silver ornamental leaf made from electroplated Aspen leaves making it a beautiful gift for the Holidays.

{style muse} Olivia Wilde

Hollywood it girl Olivia Wilde has the total package-talent, beauty and a killer sense of style.  Her sexy and sophisticated look has continued to land her at the top of the best-dressed list repeatedly over the last few years.  Wilde’s infamous Marchesa white gown from the 2009 Emmys made her mark in the fashion world.

The New York native told InStyle magazine, “Black clothes look good on blondes, but when your hair is brown, wear colors--blues, greens and purples" when recently asked what her style secret was.

Wilde’s sensational style is on the rise, leaving designers around the world falling at her feet, and fashion lovers simply inspired-especially me.
Style Bistro has a very good lookbook with her best outfits.

Now, we have no excuses to add a new pet to our family.

{over the top} Transparent Burberry Weather Cape

This invisible weather Burberry Prorsum cape is perfect for protecting an outfit without covering it up with a rain coat. With its black lining, buttons and transparent material it is fashionable yet sensible too. The cape has the same features as an umbrella and a raincoat put together; but with a much more stylish approach than both.
Lose the hassle of carrying around a huge umbrella or covering your outfit with an oversized raincoat. No matter what the forecast is, don’t let that stop you from always arriving in style.

Veganism is Making an Appearance in Fashion

Years ago when one heard the words fashion and vegan in the same sentence; an image of celebrities doused in red paint came to mind.  Fashion veganism has come a long way since then, and now making its debut in a more tasteful way. But many people are often confused about what fashion veganism actually is.  There is a major misconception that the term vegan only refers to the food we eat; all other use of animal byproducts as well such as suede, leather, fur and silk refers to it.

The city of West Hollywood has recently left many retailers unhappy after banning the sale of fur clothing within city limits.  Stores on Melrose Place such as Marc Jacobs, Vera Wang, Oscar de la Renta, and Carolina Herrera all fell victims to the ban, bringing the city one step closer to a go green lifestyle.

So where can we find this vegan clothing?  Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman, offer some options; websites such as Shopbop.com also sell a variety of vegan clothing that is totally trendy and adorable for animal lovers to buy.  Stella McCartney, a lifelong vegetarian only uses animal friendly fabrics in her collections.

But vegan fashion is now making its way down the runway as well. Jean Paul Gaultier has collaborated most recently with Melissa Shoes to create a vegan friendly stiletto.  Dior has also jumped on it after custom designing shoes for Natalie Portman, an outspoken vegan and PETA supporter.

As I am far, far away from being a vegan on all departments, I try my best to purchase faux fur items and stay clear of full fur products. I can't live without fashion, there is nothing I love more than a new bag or pair of pumps but I have a very special place in my heart for animals, besides all my careers, I'm a frustrated vet. I hope that a balance for luxury and animal friendly fashion is in the works.  Fashionistas are always looking to make a statement; might as well make it stylish and eco-friendly at the same time...right?

{exhibitions} Valentino Virtual Museum

Valentino and partner Giancarlo Giammetti will launch the Valentino Garavani Virtual Museum, on December 5th that will feature more than 300 dresses, WWD reported today. The video shows a preview of what we will see on the desktop application. I can wait to spend hours browsing the museum, as you should now by now that I love Valentino.

“I see it as part of my legacy,” Valentino said to the publication “I am happy that thousands of students, young designers and fashion people will be able to see and study my work in every aspect of it, and in a manner easy and accessible for the younger generations. But it is also important to remember things of the past, to review the fashion that has shaped our lives. I would call it ‘Future Memory.’”

“Animated galleries show a life’s work, and key dresses have been photographed in 360 degrees,” he added. “Click on them and they revolve to show every line and stitch. Click again and discover the history of the dress, who wore it where and when, see it in the amazing campaigns that we created for the collections in the late 1960s, 1970s, Eighties, Nineties…move through to other spaces leading off the sunlit courtyards under the Roman sky to new galleries full of photographs of friends, models, drawings, animations, videos.”

{awards night} AMA's Red Carpet Yays & Nays

Making an appearance alone on the red carpet was Heidi Klum in Giles Deacon’s Spring 2012 line. This silver, simple laser-cut dress was paired with navy undergarments made her look awesome on the red carpet. YAY.

Taylor Swift loves to keep it simple and sometimes too much on the safe side. She was sparkling (literally) wearing a full sequins and nude Reem Acra Spring 2012 gown and pairing it with a simple yet sleek side braid and emerald earrings, Swift was jaw dropping to say the least. BIG YAY!

Another woman who takes the cake for best dressed was Jennifer Lopez. Wearing Zuhair Murad Couture Fall 2011 gown, she looked more like a goddess than Jenny from the block. With its see-through appearance and black beaded floral embroidery reaching up to the nape of her neck and down one sleeve, she was simply an image that nobody would want to take their eyes off of. I’m sure we all wish she has kept one of her two dresses on during the night instead of stripping down into a beaded body suit during her on-stage performance. YAY.

Leave it to Nicki Minaj to outshine everyone in her Oscar De La Renta gown from his Spring 2012 collection that look a little bit understated in comparison to her usual extravagant outfits. She loooked elegant as ever with this emerald silk-taffeta gown with black battenburg lace and broderie anglaise bodice, contrasting with her pink wig. To top it off she didn’t stop there, poking out were Alexander McQueen’s unique Armour Wedge Sandals. If you haven’t taken a look at these shoes yet it’s an absolute must; they are designed with no heel, and all metal. It wasn't one of my favorite dresses but she rocked it. YAY/NAY

My BIG NAY goes to Katy Perry as she made her way on the red carpet wearing Vivienne Westwood’s white Chinese sequined dress. The dress was competing with her electric blue snakeskin heels, red lips, pink hair and her multicolored headpiece. Not only was there way too much going on with this outfit, but she seemed to be falling out of the dress. Next time go for something that shows off your beauty Katy, I'm glad I wasn't in front of you with a bad hangover.

{diy} Kendra Scott Color Bar Jewelry

Remember that day that you decided you were a jewelry designer and run to buy all the equipment and stones available to start making all those pieces you wanted, at a bargain price? And remember how you ended up with a hundred dollars less on you wallet and a necklace that looked made by a Pre-K girl's project?

Well Kendra Scott is coming to your rescue. On her website, you can customize that pair of one-of-a-kind earrings or a necklace for you with her Color Bar {no Mrs. Levin, she doesn't serve wine}, where you pick out the design of the jewelry and what type of gems you would like in them.

I had so much fun dragging and dropping gems and since my hands were free I was able to sip wine while making tons of pairs of earrings with turquoises and tiger’s eyes. I swear I could stay on her website all night it is so much fun!

{currently obssesed} Pomellato Rings

I can not stress enough how utterly OBSESSED I am with Pomellato's cut cabochon rings.

Pomellato has made an art of setting coloured stones on earrings, rings, and necklaces with precious and semi-precious stones and m
y favorite collections are the classic Nudo and the new M’ama Non M’ama (love me, love me not) collection.

The Nudo is a minimalist set of rings that can be worn at any time like a pair of jeans. Casually and elegant, several Nudo rings can be put together so we can create our favourite combination and collect them over the years now.

The new collection M’ama Non M’ama, features nine sets of rings — there is a stone for every thought and a colour for every emotion — with a cabochon stone on a simple gold band. The idea is to personalize the rings by combining them based on your emotions.

For example, right now I'm feeling:

passion - for Pomellato
desire - to get my paws on my husband's cc to buy one
jealousy - for those b**** that already own one
pleasure - thinking how jealous those b**** will be when I get the 9 rings
tenderness - just because I need this color too
love - for my hubby
hope - that my hubby gets me one
nostalgia - because the guy sitting next to me {AKA husband} just told me to forget about it
emotion - because I'm crying after he said that

You see??? I need them ALL.

Katherine Kwei S/S 2012 Handbag Collection

Last week, I was invited to preview Katherine Kwei’s S/S 2012 Collection and had a chance to meet her, she is very sweet and feminine and you can see that reflected on her bags.  Kwei’s handbags are known for their unique Chinese knotting technique she learned from her. They are also recognized by their charms, rich materials and intricate embroidery patterns.

This season’s bag varied from metallic colors and street style purses, to elegant seafoam clutches and the designs seamlessly blend a modern style with a traditional feel. She uses metallics, neutrals, shiny fabrics, and the “Infinity” knot to really bring the past and the present together.

At the event, the talented Lacee Swan was on hand to illustrate each guest holding a KK handbag as a gift, that was very unique.  I would like to thank  Katherine Kwei for presenting us her upcoming collection and the Small Girls PR for putting on such a lovely event.

{the blogger's box} Incite, Invigorate, Influence, Inspire

Incite, Invigorate, Influence, Inspire

By Jessie Thorpe of Denimology

When selecting blogs to be featured in Links à La Mode, more often than not, I'm drawn in by an interesting image or a cleverly composed title. I'm a big fan of wit, whimsy and a little sarcasm. However, this week I handled things a bit different and made choices spurred on by inspiration, you know, that good ol' gut feeling!

Bloggers aplenty (this means you) emboldened me to do more than just write about style and fashion (denim in my case). I wanted to bust out some serious sequin yardage. I pondered why everything looks better with glitter. I was impressed- no, I was in awe- with brilliant use of nail polish! I chose links that lured me far from my computer, taunting me to use my hands for anything but typing. Dear bloggers, you may have a small pedestal (you know.. your blog), but your voice can still be mighty... and inspirational! The future of fashion belongs to those of us willing to get our hands dirty!

After you've had a good read of this weeks links, step away from the computer and go stain up those hands. Make sure to document the process because, you know, your coming right back here to your computer anyway. You may as well be inspirational. Last thing, it's okay if all you do is make is a mess; at least you were inspired and that counts for something, right?

{news} Men vs. Women Spending

Bundle, a site that uses anonymized spending data from 20 million Visa and Mastercard users, tracked how single men and women spent in 10 categories over the course of six months (Oct. 2010 to March 2011).

To my surprise, men spend more than women on just about everything, including dining out, travel and electronics but they can not compete with us on clothing, shoes and other wear category. At the end we always win!
